If everything that a person does is caused than the person could not be considered responsible. This would remove praise and blame from the equation. If people are not responsible for what they do, then we cannot find anything praise worthy or blame worthy in those actions that they do take. Praise and blame could still be used in this scenario as a way to fulfill psychological needs for both the person expressing the praise or blame and for the person receiving them. People who are upset and do not express it end up letting that blame for the other person build until they resent that person and do not want to be around them anymore. Without some form of blame the other person may never know that the potential blamer is upset with them. Then they will never change their actions. If they never change their actions, they may upset many other people and become ostracized without ever realizing the reason. Without praise they may also never learn that their behavior is appreciated and they will stop doing it. Without ever receiving praise people may also become unhappy and eventually wonder why they bother with a life where no one appreciates them. Praise and blame help people to live their lives in a more pleasant way, although blame probably gets massively overused. These expressions of emotions also help to develop people’s experience. When someone you respect tells you that you were wrong, this experience is one cause that leads you not to do the same thing again. Praise and blame help people to understand the people around them and help them to develop experience in a way the people around them appreciate. This makes praise and blame sound like a way of training people, but I think that is likely part of the truth as upsetting as it may sound. Praise and blame also allow people to express emotions that may build in them otherwise.
If the world is determined, what are some other ways praise and blame are still useful?
